About Turku

Turku

The city centre of Turku was founded long ago on the east side of the Aura River, which is still declared in the local vernacular today. The custom in Turku is to say that something is found “on this side of the river” or “the other side of the river”. Strangely enough, it doesn't matter what side of the river a person happens to be on when saying it. The older east side is “this side” and the newer west side is “the other”.

Even though Turku is almost 800 years old, the cityscape at its finest is still defined by the riverfront. In the summer the Aura riverfront is like a second living room for Turku citizens. People relax on benches in the evening, bike, walk their dogs and catch up with friends.
